How to use our site

Using our website to plan a journey

Planning a journey with Traveline is simple. Start by entering where you’re travelling from and to in the journey planner on our homepage. This journey planner also appears on every page on the site on right-hand side. You can search using a postcode, street name, stop name (if you know it), or a place. For the best results when searching place-to-place, include the county (for example, Exeter, Devon). Then simply confirm your chosen origin and destination from the drop-down options.

You can also change the date and time you want to travel. If you don’t make any changes, we’ll show you a selection of journeys starting from the current time.

To refine your results even further, select ‘Advanced Journey Options’. Here, you can choose which modes of transport you wish to use, adjust walking speeds, or select other preferences to suit your needs.

Once you’re ready, click ‘Get directions’ to view your journey options. You’ll be able to see your route on a map and zoom in to find the exact stop locations and walking routes.

Using the website for live time displays

There are several easy ways to view real-time departure information on our site:

  • Search from the homepage or the Plan Your Journey page: Enter a place in the search box and select it from the drop-down list. You’ll be taken to a map showing nearby bus stops. Click on the stop you need to view live departures or choose Get me here to plan a journey. Selecting Departures will open the live time display board.
  • Use the map directly: Click 'Find your stop on a map' to go straight to the interactive map, then choose your stop from there.
  • Save your favourites: At the top of each live time display board, you’ll find a star icon. Select this to save the stop as a favorite so it always appears on your Traveline homepage.

Using the website to view timetables

You can view bus, ferry and tram timetables on our website in several ways:

  • From the homepage: Click on the “Find a Timetable” tab within the green plan your journey box. Enter the service number and locality (e.g., “1 Leeds”).
  • From the main menu: Select the “Plan Your Journey” tab in the top navigation bar and enter your search in the timetable search box.
  • From the timetable search box: Use the timetable search box located on the right-hand side of most pages on the site.

After entering your chosen service or location, simply click the Search button. You’ll see a list of matching timetable options. Select the one you want to view. Once the timetable opens, you can choose the date you wish to view and switch between major stops only or all stops. Please note that times shown for stops between major timing points are estimates.
