£3 National Bus Fare Cap

The government has introduced a new £3 cap on single bus fares in England outside London from 1 January 2025 through to 31 December 2025 to help millions access better opportunities and promote greater bus use by passengers.

The government is providing over £150 million to deliver the £3 cap.

The fare cap does not necessarily mean that fares will rise to £3 where they are already cheaper. Local authorities and Metro Mayors can also fund or continue to fund their own schemes to reduce fares lower than £3, as is already the case in London, West Yorkshire, and Greater Manchester.

Participation in the bus fare cap scheme is voluntary, and some bus companies have chosen not to take part. If your local company is not included, they may have other types of tickets that are suitable for your needs. Some types of routes are not eligible for the scheme, for example coach services, school-only services, or airport services.

Planning your journey

The Traveline journey planner will show you if your route is eligible, so why not plan your journey by bus today? Whether you are visiting friends or looking to save on your commute – the £3 cap on single tickets will continue to run until 31 December 2025.

Minor changes may be made as we receive service updates from operators.
